The Valley Music Hall of Fame is proud to present its Legacy Award to Dan Pessano.
For more than half a century, Dan has enriched the cultural life of the Central Valley—not only through the productions he has brought to the stage, but through the generations of people he has taught, encouraged and inspired.
Dan began his adult career as a teacher, and the heart of a teacher has remained central to everything he has done. For Dan, Good Company Players has always been as much a school as a theater—a place where young performers learn not only how to sing, dance or deliver a line, but also discipline, confidence, responsibility and respect for others. Dan has sought to raise good human beings first, as well as fine performers.
In 1973, the same year he earned his Master of Arts in Theatre Arts from Fresno State, Dan joined Chris Moad and Ronald J. Harlan in founding Good Company Players. What began as a summer dinner-theater company performing at Fresno’s Hilton Hotel found a permanent home in 1978, when Roger Rocka invited the company to transform a vacant store into what would become Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theate
In 1982, Good Company Players expanded with the opening of the more intimate 2nd Space Theatre. Together, these venues have presented hundreds of productions and thousands of performances, creating a home for professional-quality theater in the Central Valley.
But Dan’s greatest legacy cannot be measured by the number of shows produced or tickets sold. It is found in the people who have passed through his care.
Some of those young performers went on to celebrated careers on Broadway, in film, television and literature—including Audra McDonald, Chris Colfer, Heidi Blickenstaff, Christopher Gorham and many others. Countless more carried the lessons they learned from Dan into their families, classrooms, workplaces and communities. Whether they pursued a life in the performing arts or simply became more confident and compassionate people, each became part of the legacy he continues to create.
Those who know Dan describe a man who can be quiet and reserved, yet whose presence commands attention and respect. He holds himself and those around him to high standards, while leading with loyalty, patience and humor. He has helped create an environment where performers, musicians, technicians, staff members and audiences all become part of an extended family.
Dan once described himself as a “next ten minutes man”—someone who keeps his head down, places one foot in front of the other and concentrates on the work immediately before him. Over more than fifty years, those next ten minutes have built—and continue to build—one of the most enduring and influential artistic legacies in Central Valley history.
It is especially fitting that we honor Dan at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater—the home he helped create, surrounded by the community he continues to teach and inspire.
For his extraordinary contributions as an educator, performer, director, mentor and community leader, the Valley Music Hall of Fame proudly presents its Legacy Award to Dan Pessano.
